THE HOLY GEETA

holygeetabook_small

Pujya Gurudev breathed, lived and talked Bhagavad Geeta throughout His life. For that reason Srimad Bhagavad Geeta is the heart of Chinmaya Mission.

Sri Gurudev, Swami Chinmayananda, evolved into becoming a true devotee under the guidance of Swami Tapovanam of Uttar Kashi, and spread the knowledge of Upanishads and Geeta to millions worldwide.  His glory is invoked as one who is pure (Om Pavanaya Namah), one who purifies those he comes in contact with (Om Pavakaya Namah) and thus His mere presence and the grounds he walks on becomes pure and sacred (Om Teertha Swaroopaya Namah).

CMWRC GEETA CHANTING COMPETITION

holygeetabook_small

The CMWRC Geeta Chanting program is very near and dear to Pujya Swami Dheeranandaji. He nurtured it from its initial beginning as a small competitive event, with love and care, and has now institutionalized it into Children Summer Camp curriculum and Weekly Bala Vihar Common Time agenda. As our Geeta Acharya, Pujya Swamiji has expanded participation categories to include reading and comprehension, to invite greater adult participation. In keeping with His Guru’s mission, Pujya Swamiji is sowing the seed of Geeta Jnana in every CMWRC member, and through chanting and comprehension, making each of us more and more conscious of the knowledge of the Self.
The annual Geeta chanting competition will be held locally at all chapters and is open to children, youth and adults. Both Chinmaya Mission members and non-members of the greater Washington DC area (DC, Maryland, and Virginia) are invited to participate. Everyone is encouraged to register and participate in a category that suits them – Memory, Memory/Comprehension, Reading, Reading/Comprehension or Writing (Reflection).

Why Chant Geeta?

whygita
Verse composed by Pujya Guruji Swami Tejomayananda

From the recitation of the Bhagavad Geeta arises the desire to know its meaning. Thence arises the Knowledge (of the Self). From this Knowledge arises fulfillment. Hence an individual must recite the Bhagavad Geeta. The study of the Geeta is the key to opening the vast treasure of God’s love for us. It starts with chanting, then study, and over time, assimilating (embracing) that same love wholeheartedly and completely. Geeta Chanting allows one to begin this journey here and now, and opening themselves to the embrace of the infinite love.

Chapter 12- Bhakti Yoga

Prince Arjuna, having seen with his own eyes the wonder that is Lord Krishna’s Divine Form, poses a question to Lord Krishna. Is it better to worship a manifested form, like the Divine Form he just witnessed, or to meditate and contemplate on the Unmanifest?

In response, Lord Krishna says that the essential attitude and characteristics of a true devotee is what truly matters, regardless of the preference to worship the Lord as manifest or unmanifest. Lord Krishna warns that a rare few devotees are able to take the path of devotion of Nirguna (unmanifested) Brahma and so describes different ways to express devotion. Lord Krishna then elaborates that it is easy for anyone to get started on the path of devotion. To describe the characteristics of a true devotee, Lord Krishna enumerates the key values which makes such a person dear to Him. As a seeker develops devotion and lives those values, he or she can rise up to be pure and be one with Him.

Presentation & Tips

The 'Presentation' aspect of Geeta Chanting competition draws judges focus on two key attributes: Dress and Attitude.

  • Dress: Preferably, the participants should wear customary Indian dress. Other attire is acceptable as long as it is appropriate for a spiritual/prayer activity.
  • Attitude: Participants should adorn a respectful and prayerful attitude during the entire chanting session (entry, chanting and exit).

Format of the Competition: Each Participant chant in front of two judges in a closed room.

Pronunciation:Sanskrit is the language for chanting the Geeta. Please pay close attention to Swamiji’s pronunciation as you practice. Anglicized pronunciation of Sanskrit (or pronunciation influenced by other regional Indian languages) means loss of valuable points.

Practice: Pujya Swamiji has gone extra lengths to provide many means of practice for all age groups: YouTube, audio, booklet. A simple tip is to listen to the audio with a booklet in hand and listen again and again. In a short time, you will become intimate with the Chapter.

Comprehension and Writing: Read Sri Gurudev (Swami Chinmayananda) commentaries during your practice and preparation. As you grasp the meaning of what you are practicing, your intimacy with the Chapter will be even deeper. Pujya Guruji, Swami Tejomayananda explained knowledge as unstirred sugar in a tea cup. The tea becomes sweet only after we stir the sugar thoroughly. Listening and chanting places the knowledge in our minds. Comprehension and writing begin the stirring process for growth.
