We will focus on developing technique, rhythm, and expression, and students will work towards mastering items appropriate to their level. By the end of the year, they will perform
these pieces in a final showcase, demonstrating their growth and skills in a Bharathanatyam production.
Levels of Learning Bharatanatyam:
Beginner Level:
Stretches and Warm-ups: A series of physical exercises to improve flexibility, posture, and strength, preparing the body for the demands of Bharathanatyam.
Adavus: Fundamental dance units involving specific footwork, hand gestures, and rhythmic movements that form the building blocks of Bharathanatyam.
Small Bhajans and Slokams: Simple devotional songs and verses will be introduced to enhance students’ understanding of rhythm, mudras (hand gestures), and devotion in dance.
Alarippu: A simple, rhythmic dance sequence that serves as a warm-up for dancers, helping them focus on posture, rhythm, and movement. It introduces the dancer to the basic elements of the performance.
Intermediate Level:
Jathiswaram: Pieces that combine rhythmic jathis (pure dance sequences, or nritta) with swarams (melodic phrases) to demonstrate synchronization of melody and rhythm.
Shabdam: A semi-expressive dance item combining both pure dance and abhinaya, focusing on rhythmic movements and simple storytelling.
Krithis: Structured compositions with lyrics, often devotional in nature, where dance movements depict the meaning of the song along with stories correlated to the song’s deity.

Advanced Level:
Thillana: A lively, rhythmic dance piece at the end of a performance, showcasing intricate footwork and fast-paced movements, along with minimal descriptive lyrics regarding a deity.

Advanced Krithis: More complex compositions where dancers focus on deeper emotional expression and storytelling through abhinaya.
Advanced Kauthuvam: These involve more intricate rhythmic patterns and sophisticated storytelling, typically depicting temple rituals or divine stories.

Late arrivals may have to sit in the class as a witness to the class being taught and not be allowed to participate. However, the consequences for late arrivals will be at the discretion of the teachers. The class is only offered once a week and in order for the child to progress, they would require a minimum of the allocated class time each week. Further, the irregular and tardy students will not be eligible for the annual day and other event participation. Continued excessive late arrivals and absenteeism will not be permitted in the class and will result in permanent dismissal from class without refunds.
Three unexcused absences will result in a no-certificate at the end of the year.
